In the 1959 to 1961, a famine caused but an Industrial Revolution triggered the government to launch its first population control policies. People moved away from rural areas and their traditional work as farmers to towns and cities, to work in factories, often owned by western countries brought to china by cheap labour costs compared to the western world. This influx of western ideas thwarted the government’s campaign, as the later longer fewer Policy was not considered attractive by the Chinese population who moved towards a western ideal. But the government continued and by 1970, State Family Programmes had been introduced. This lowered the population growth rate. In 1978 3 children per family was average but the government persisted, as this was still too many. This was in the form of various advertising campaigns, however their effect was not dramatic enough, and in 1979, the government wished to stamp out population growth completely. So they introduced a strict population policy. The policy used a â€Å"carrot and stick† method to encourage families who participated, and punish those who did not. Encouragement was in the form of great incentives from the government. These included free education for the child, priority housing, family benefit and a state pension for the family. There were also high penalties for having a second child. Including loss of all incentives, and benefits and fines of up to 15% of the family’s annual income. This more than halved the birth rate per thousand from 40 per thousand to 17 per thousand. But the government continued further, the legal age for marriage was raised to 22 for men and 20 for women, to marry couples also had to apply to the state for permission. State permission was also required to have a child. Abortions became compulsory for the second pregnancy. Chinas population policy had been very successful at reducing population growth, it met targets set for 2000 in 1994. However the population policy had serious implications for the natural balance of population. The Chinese population has an entire generation of â€Å"little emperors† the title given to the supposedly spoiled, greedy, bad-tempered, lazy children of male only children. More seriously as young men this generation has difficulty finding a wife. This is a result of Chinese ideal of male supremacy. The Chinese government also commissioned teams to go from village to village providing a sterilisation service. This at times was a very unfair method and often breached human rights. As the teams were paid by the number of operations they carried out. So often women were sterilised against their will. In Chinas anti-feminist society it was almost always that women were sterilised instead of men. The government would defend their actions saying that there was a serious need for rapid population control or there would have been further suffering to the people. It is very harsh and half the women that go into the clinic aren’t told what they actually do to the unborn baby. They deserve the right to know what is about to happen inside of their body. People know that there are consequences to having sex and not every condom or birth control will actually prevent them from becoming pregnant every single time. Contraceptives have some flaws. Even if you strongly believe a baby will ruin your life and that abortion is the only option left, you will regret it in the long run. The whole reason why abortion was made legal in the United States was because of a woman named Norma McCorvey or otherwise known as â€Å"Jane Roe†. She wanted an abortion a nd wanted it to be legal so she pushed or legalization of the procedure and it worked. Then after that she legally got an abortion (Roe v. Wade). Years after all this happened, McCorvey converted to Christianity and found the God that has always loved her. She soon came to learn that the abortion she had, was wrong. Now she works with an organization called â€Å"Pro-Life† and spends every moment in her life trying to take all regret she had from having the abortion by helping other young woman that were just like her when she was their age by preventing them from getting abortions (Crowe, Janet M).McCorveys story is truly inspiring and proves that you will regret the choice of choosing to abort a human being. McCorvey came across two verses in the Bible that explained why abortion was wrong. In Exodus 20:13 it says, â€Å"You must not murder†, which explains killing someone who is in existence is wrong (Moses; Bible). In Psalm 139:16 it says, â€Å"You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book.Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed†, that verse tells you that God had a plan for that child within your body and he intended for that child to live life just the way the mother carrying the baby did (David; Bible). No matter what your reason is for an abortion you will always be killing a living thing, be damaging to your emotions and/or body, and you will not be happy with the choice you made. If murder is against the law then so should abortion. The baby is living inside of you, so it can come into this world and live just like the two people that created the baby.The certain procedures that are done to make the pregnancy terminated aren’t considered the most commendable things to do because of the way they are performed and the risks that are at stake. No one is ever going to be proud of aborting a child that could have grown up to be the next â€Å"someone† or actually make a di fference in someone’s life, so why do it? Each person deserves a chance at life and deserves a chance to go through the things people go through every day. The quintessential element of King's quest for civil rights was its allegiance to non-violence and its respect for human rights (D'Angelo 2000). That is why, even today, Martin Luther King is considered a human rights icon. Through his zealous and immaculately polished oratorical skills, King tried his best to sensitize the American masses to the universal quest for human respect and dignity. What King intended to do was to hit hard against racial discrimination and social injustice. However, this essentially peaceful and non-violent champion of civil rights was brutally assassinated in 1968. Malcolm X's commitment to black pride and social justice had its origins in the racial harassment that he and his family had to bear with in his growing up years. Being a smart and brilliant student, he soon realized that though violence was certainly not the right strategy to combat racial injustice, yet it was important to be ardently vociferous in one's struggle for social justice (D'Angelo 2000). Hence, he became an active member and spokesperson of the Nation of Islam. However, this non-violent but fiery crusader for social justice had to meet a tragic death because of his moral opposition to the Nation of Islam leader Elijah Mohammad.One another prominent name in the universal struggle for civil rights and social justice is Chico Mendes. Chico was a regular Brazilian rubber tapper who also happened to be an avid environmental activist and a guardian of the rights of native rubber tappers. Chico's struggle for saving environment eventually metamorphosed into a fight to save the Brazilian rainforests and in turn to save the future of humanity. Tragically, this peaceful adherent of social justice was violently silenced by his more radical opponents. Rosa Parks also known as the mother of Modern Civil Rights Movement was an African American civil rights activist (D'Angelo 2000). Parks' gestures of blatant defiance to the festering symbols of racial injustice bestowed on her an iconic status. Courtesy her jest for social justice, she received many national and international honors and accolades. The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo was a group of Argentinean mothers and concerned citizens who peacefully and non-violently protested against the disappearance of many children and youngsters during the military dictatorship that lasted roughly seven years.
